NaPodPoMo Day 22 – Help, Heal, and Thrive: Navigating Caregiving with Radical Self-Care

Welcome to the RadicalRx Show, where we explore radical strategies for living, learning, and thriving in this beautiful, messy world. I’m Ellen K. Martin, and today, we’re diving into a topic that many of you may be able to relate to: navigating our own health challenges while being caretakers for elderly parents or other loved ones. It’s a delicate balance, and I’ve got some insights to share that might just help you find your footing.

Now, if you're anything like me, asking for help might not come naturally. But let me tell you, it is crucial. This summer, I nearly reached my breaking point before I finally “Cried Uncle!” and started asking for help.

I posted on Facebook, and the response was heartwarming. Friends reached out, brought meals, and offered support in small but meaningful ways. It was a reminder that we don't have to do it all alone.

A couple of friends even recommended hiring an agency for some in home care assistance. We ended up hiring one of the agencies that was recommended, and having someone from there come out was a game-changer.

Now, I recognize that hiring help can be a privilege, and not everyone has the means. If you can, even just for a day or two a week, it can free up some much-needed time for you to recharge and focus on your own well-being. But if hiring professional help isn’t an option, there are other ways to lighten the load. Local community services, volunteer organizations, or even leaning on family and friends can make a big difference.

Sometimes, it’s just about getting creative and finding support in unexpected places. The key is– Don’t be afraid to to ask for help!

One thing I’ve learned is that self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential. When you’re caring for others, your health often takes a back seat, but running on empty doesn’t help anyone. For me, setting boundaries has been life-changing. I had to learn to say no to things that stretched me too thin and yes to things that refueled me, like taking a walk in the Metroparks or scheduling regular massages. In fact, I had my bi-weekly torture massage today!

Even small acts of self-care—like journaling or a few minutes of breathwork—can make a huge difference. Don’t underestimate the impact of these small things.

I also want to emphasize the power of community. Whether it’s a support group, an online forum, or just a circle of trusted friends, having a space where you can share your struggles and feel heard is so important. I’ve been part of a support group for several years now, and it’s been one of my lifelines. That’s part of the inspiration for building RadicalRx as a community, so that no one has to feel alone on this journey.

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this episode, it’s this: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s from a neighbor, a professional service, or a group of friends, reaching out can be a lifeline—not just for you, but for those you’re caring for. Because when you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to take care of others.

Thank you for joining me today on the RadicalRx Show. If this resonated with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Share your thoughts and stories with me in the comments.

Take care, and until next time, don’t forget to breathe.
